The Hunger Games And It s The One I Just Finished Reading

The best book series in the world finally exist. It s called the Hunger Games. Even people who hate reading love it since it is that good of a book. The first book in this series is called the Hunger Games and it s the one I just finished reading. This book gives society a twist, and changes the way people think because finally, for once in a story, the female lead character is the one who can fight better. I m sick of all those stories where they portray women as weak and need a man to save them. I hate stories like that and hunger games is finally a story in which the woman is the one saving the man. I would recommend this book to anyone and I think that even if you hate books in general you should read this book sometime in your†¦show more content†¦Her worlds flow smooth into your head and never confuse you. Even amazing books like Divergent confused me before when the writer was talking about how she s in a glass box but then suddenly the main character feels concrete a round her. That was so confusing and I never remember once being confused like that in this book nor do I remember any grammar mistakes. Now let s start with the ending since I just can t stop thinking about it. It was such a relief that Katniss Everdeen won the hunger games along with Peeta. I remember when Rue told Katniss, You have to win, and finally she did win. It was a little scary at the end however since there was a chance Cato would win. But luckily Katniss and Peeta were fighting together on the same side and were powerful enough to defeat him. After Cato fell off the cornucopia and into the mutts I feel bad for Katniss and Peeta for having to listen to his screams. They had to listen to his screams for so long in the cold. In the hunger games it gets really cold at night so could you imagine such a night to sleep in. You are in the dark and extremely cold on top of a cornucopia and the whole night you have to listen to the screams of someone being slowly ate by Capitol e ngineered mutts. Also you know that if you fall down from the cornucopia you will die a painful death and scream just like the Cato who is slowly dying. Katniss is an amazing person because she was generous enough to

We will write a custom essay on The Differences between Buddhist Music in Japan specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Religiously, music reflects how followers worship their respective deities. In the Buddhist practice, music and chants are used for meditation across the global span of the religion. However, different forms of music and chants are used in a variety of ways throughout religious practices. The music and different forms of chants in the Buddhist religion affect Buddhist practices, and are also influenced by the religion and the different locations around the world in which Buddhism is practiced. Japan, China, and Tibet have the highest concentration of Buddhists and Buddhism is an integral part of the culture in these nations. In addition to Buddhism being reflected clearly in the cultures of Japan, China, and Tibet, each of these nations also has their own forms of prayer expressed through airing musical styles. In order to further investigate the styles and forms of Buddhist music, a short history of the religion will bring many of the elements of this cultural and religious music to light. Buddhism is based on a concurrent following of Four Noble Truths and an Eightfold Path. The Four Noble Truths are: 1) that life consists of suffering, 2) that the origin of suffering is attachment, 3) that suffering can only be ended through Miranda, and 4) that the path to the end of suffering is the Eightfold Path. This Development. The basis of the Buddhist faith is the belief in Karma (that the sections one makes in their current life will be returned to them in their future lives) and Rebirth (that one will be reincarnated in another life after death). There are a variety of different forms of prayer, worship, and meditation practices in the Buddhist religion, and each of these practices involve different forms of music and chanting. Every detail of faith, from the Four Noble Truths to the deep belief in Karma, is reflected in the sounds of Buddhism. These sounds have become a part of the Japanese, Chinese, and Tibetan cultures and are a constant reminder of the Buddhist tradition in these parts of the world. For example, In a Zen temple, the hours of the day may be marked by the deep somber tones of the big o-gang bell in the bell tower, evoking the idea of impermanence (Mall 1959). A bell tower can be heard for miles around and will create an environment of thoughtful contemplation for the surrounding area, further connecting the culture of a location with the precious music of a religion, and constantly reminding practicing Buddhists of their beliefs and dedication to follow the Eightfold Path. The effect of a Buddhist Temple bell tower may be felt in a number of religious raciest; the Muslim call to prayer is heard from a mosque across entire cities at midday, and the melodious clanging of Catholic and Christian cathedral bells may at times reach a volume that could only be described as a roar, but each of these sounds is a reflection of the religious practices these holy buildings house. Buddhism is set apart from other religions in the intricate and sacred ceremonies that revolve around the music of the religion. Wellness expresses his rapture at Buddhist music, There is scarcely any religious denomination on the face of this earth in whose sacred ceremonies music holds a more prominent place than Buddhism (Wellness 1957) In oral traditions of Buddhism, the words of a sacred text are learned and recited from memory. Chant is a ritual used as a musical representation of this oral tradition. Not only are sacred texts memorized, but when these texts are recited, they are said with rhythm and pitches, which create a more spiritual and reverent atmosphere during the ritual of chant. The Buddhist monks who perform these chants therefore memorize the sacred texts as well as the specific choral or pitched movements or intervals that are carefully placed throughout the chants to emphasize certain parts of the texts and evoke certain emotions tied to the sacred traditions reflected in the texts as well as in the act of chanting. This ritual of chanting is a religious experience for the monk who is performing the chants as well as for the viewers of the bring awareness to the mentality of truth and living deeply connected with the present moment, an important aspect of faith for followers of Buddhism. Again, Just as different countries have different styles of music that reflect their ultras and people, the three countries in which Buddhism is most prominent, Japan, China, and Tibet, have different cultural forms of Buddhist music that represent their strong Buddhist faith as well as integrate the musical instruments and aspects of their culture. The music of these countries is similar in many ways, laced together by the common thread of Buddhism to guide the development of music for worship, but each nation still reflects the unique culture of the place in the Buddhist music of the people. .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .postImageUrl , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:hover , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:visited , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:active { border:0!important; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:active , .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u79f9af46506cdb787a2df405b5d3e49c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The finance department EssaySOMY is an improvised chant that has two styles: rooky and rooky. SOMY uses the You scale, a pentatonic scale with ascending intervals of two, three, two, two and three semitones. SOMY is a form of esoteric ritual chant that is used worldwide in the Buddhist tradition, though the use of this chant is also relevant to the place in which people worship. SOMY is a type of music that possesses mystical syllables inhabiting the recitation of certain mantras. When this form of music is performed, the assembled congregation attain a blessing from hearing these chants. Since SOMY is a type of chant and meditation that is used in the Buddhist religion and cultures, it is influenced by the Buddhist faith, but t is also influenced by the cultures around it. While most forms of Japanese Buddhism use music quite prevalently, true SOMY is a rare find in Japan, present only in a select few temples on specific ceremonial occasions. In the scope of Buddhism in Japan, the influence of Buddhism of other cultures and the influence of other languages are accepted as a part of the music, and part of the ceremony. Japanese Buddhist liturgical chants are divided into three different categories: Bonsai, hymns in which Chinese characters stand for Sanskrit sounds, Was, hymns with texts written in Japanese, and Kansas, hymns with purely Chinese texts. In the way Chinese text substituting Sanskrit, and Chinese text standing alone are clear examples of the blending of languages and culture throughout Japanese Buddhism, and the truly worldwide breadth of the Buddhist religion. Surprisingly, hymnal texts written in Japanese only occupy one of the categories of Japanese Buddhist texts. The most melodious of these chants is the Was. Was tends to be heavily syllabic in style, poetic in text, and with a clear line, creating a musical chant that is most like the more Western understanding of religious hymns and worship music. Compared to Was chants, SOMY is much more complex musically, and the rarity of this type of worship music makes it that much more intriguing for anyone who is privileged to hear it performed. There are two levels of SOMY that are observed, the first style lies exclusively in the domain of priesthood, which passes from master to pupil continuously, as reflection of the that is observed is for the public to observe, but is still only performed by Buddhist priests and monks. Yet many of these mantras, or Hookup, are reserved only for those in priesthood. Hookup literally means a mystery piece or secret composition. The secrecy of these mantras is due to the belief that they are a psychic and cosmic force. There is power to this chant because of the presence of the mystic syllable mm, which is sacred in the Buddhist religion. In this way, the importance of music to Buddhism is further solidified by the private performances of SOMY, proving that the music and chants of the Buddhist tradition are not only for the benefit of the congregation or as a type of worship, but also as a sacred way of passing on priesthood between holy leaders. In another form of these Japanese chants, Kansas, four ritual sections comprise and aka sense of the chants, each a different genre of chants, used for different occasions and to evoke a variety of different emotional responses. The first, Bombay, is a hymn of praise, used during ecstatic times of worship. Second is the Gangs, an elaborate chant performed by priests while they deliberately and ceremoniously scatter lotus flowers, a Buddhist symbol of enlightenment. The don-on is an offering of pure chant or mantra to the Buddhist deity, Buddha himself. Lastly, the Shake-Joy is a chant that occurs toward the end of any service as a closing, a contemplative farewell. These chants explore Japanese Buddhism in greater depth and allow one to understand the different ways that music and chants are used in the ceremonies and services of the religion. The music of Buddhism is central to the faith because without music many Buddhist ceremonies could not take place, which is a crucial difference between Buddhism and other faiths, many of which employ music to aid worship, but the central aspect of the religion would not be lost if the music were missing. The important role that music plays to the Buddhist faith is clearly represented by the complexity of the music and chants. Each song and chant has a pacific meaning, a particular time and place, and even is performed by certain Buddhist leaders. After the Eddo period, Western music and influences enter Japan during a time known as the Meijer Period (1868-1911); however, the new western influence did not completely replace the traditional music styles that were established during the Eddo period. .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .postImageUrl , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:hover , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:visited , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:active { border:0!important; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:active , .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0 .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u8f29d6fe18d1002ece35ecda5107dcc0:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Essay On Pop MusicThe Meijer period introduced western concepts such as harmonistic and fixed meter and tempo, which was not common in music from the Eddo period. These western influences were combined with the traditional Japanese scale and were implemented into the newly developed public school systems. Many of the songs that were used were traditional Japanese folk songs or western songs that had been translated into Japanese text. One of the primarily Japanese instruments with a religious affiliation is the Chihuahuas. Most of the recent pieces played on this instrument are derived from spiritual or meditative songs. During the Eddo period, a group of priests called the Sumo used the instrument as a spiritual tool to help focus breathing for meditation. These priests were from a sect of Buddhism that saw the instrument as a way to achieve enlightenment by playing songs that inspired Winnie is a term used by the Chinese that refers to music. Fabian is a term to denote Buddhist monastic chants. It has been used by the Chinese since Buddhism was introduced. Fabian in translation means scripture recitation; it is emphasized that the chants be tranquil. Chant is the only body of liturgical action and an expression of the liturgy itself. It is used to channel liturgical participation amongst the people. Gather is a sacred verse. Buddhist music has made an influence on world music Just as it has been influenced. Buddhist famine, which is characterized by a relaxed and say pace with solemn, soft tones. Chinese music has been influenced by Famine when it was developed to popularize a new style of giving sermons and publicizing the Dharma sung to famine melodies. According to the Vienna in Ten Recitations, regularly listening to Buddhist famine can give the following five benefits: a reduction in bodily fatigue, less confusion and forgetfulness, a reduction in mental weariness, a more elegant voice and greater ease in both personal expression and communication. The style of chanting in Tibet is called choral singing, it allows the monks to sing solo chords. The monks of Tibet are able to produce deep, guttural monotones that disperse into polyphony. As a Western listener it is likely to assume that the monks are singing in parts, however each monk is displaying a full set of sounds and pitches of firsts, thirds, fifths and additional overtones as well. The ability to produce these overtones and multi-phonics with one voice has been researched and there is no reason or explanation why these monks are able to sing this way. There has been studies that think it is because of the location of Tibet because it is located at the highest elevation in the world. The monks begin training at the age of twelve, before their voices will be classified as bass, baritone or tenor voice. The average monk is able to produce a D two octaves below middle C; which is beneath the range of most male singers. The ability to produce these sounds comes with great focus which allows the singer to achieve the awareness that is stated in the Eightfold Path. Meditation Mindfulness is Buddha word for meditation. By mindfulness he means: you should always remain alert, watchful. You should always remain present. Not a single thing should be done in a sort of sleepy state of mind. You should not move like a somnambulist, you should move with a sharp consciousness. SOHO There is a sense in which the monk, in deep meditation, is thought to hear within himself spiritual sounds of specific types that only he can hear. The frame drum, cymbals, conch horn, double-reed oboe, long trumpet and thigh-bone trumpet are though to evoke the thudding, crashing, ringing and tapping within his body; which mirrors the spiritual forces of the universe. (Mbabane: 21) Upon hearing these sounds, the per son may naturally become mindful of the Buddha, mindful of the Dharma and tart, so music inspires or induce the spirit with sounds that they hear. Music plays an important role in religion, influencing the worship practices of each individual who follow these faiths. From SOMY chanting in Japan to choral, monophonic singing in Tibet, there are many differences and approaches in attaining mental wellness and achieving focal awareness in the Buddhist religion to spread the Dharma and become as Buddha-like in nature as the individual Buddhist follower can. Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isnt anyone who doesnt appreciate kindness and compassion. -Dalai Lama Bibliography Chem., A-yen. Jack Bennys Autobiography Essays - Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone

Jack Benny's Autobiography The late Jack Benny wrote an autobiography that was known to almost no one. So few, in fact, that his only daughter Joan was surprised to find the finished manuscript among her mother's files after her death in 1983. Joan Benny has augmented her father's words with her own memories and some interviews accomplished expressly for the book. It is very good. As one might expect from the most popular comedian of the age of radio, Jack Benny's memoirs are fast-paced, lively, and entertaining. His recollections are positive, and he says almost nothing negative about anyone. He traces back to his humble beginnings as Benjamin Kubelsky in Waukegan, Ill., and reveals many intriguing facts about his early life and entry into show business. He was a high school dropout (although, as he notes with irony, Waukegan eventually built a junior high school in his honor) and took to serious study of the violin only after flunking out of the family haberdashery business. ("Do we have to know their names?" he asked his father after an unknown customer left an account payment with him.) Over his mother's objections, he eventually found employment as a violinist with a local touring singer. After a while, he began to talk, which grew into a comedy monologue. Jan Kubelik, a concert violinist, forced Benny Kubelsky to change his name in 1912. He next became Ben Benny, and became fairly well known as a violin-and-comedy performer. After serving in the Navy in World War I, a similar entertainer named Ben Bernie forced him to change his name again, and he chose the name Jack, by which all sailors in the war were informally known to each other. Some of the stories have been told before, but get a much- deserved retelling from the horse's mouth here. Jack met his wife, Sadie Marks (she later changed her name to Mary Livingstone, the name of the character she played on the radio show) when he was 27 and she 14 at her family's Passover celebration in Vancouver. She was related to the Marx brothers, and Zeppo Marx (then Marks) had brought his colleague to the home for the occasion. Mary insisted that Jack listen to her violin playing. He found it horrible and he and Zeppo made a quick exit. Several years later, they met again and married in 1927 after a brief courtship. It was only after they were married that Mary reminded Jack of their first meeting. Jack continued his successful career in vaudeville, and when his partner took ill, he persuaded Mary to fill in. She was a hit. Eventually he found himself on Broadway and then in the movies. He vacillated for a time before deciding that going into radio would be worthwhile. While they were living in New York, they adopted Joan. She learned in writing the book that Mary Benny had planned to take her only to nurse her to health while they awaited an arranged baby. (Jack opposed this idea.) Naturally, they found they couldn't part with Joan. Much of the book consists of Joan's writing. She seems to be in a different book from her father. It would be a major help if she used a writing style that conformed more closely to that set by her father in the early chapters. Her short, simple sentences slow the pace in a sudden manner. She provides extreme levels of detail about her early life, homes, and the trappings of being a celebrity daughter. While this matter is interesting to a Benny buff, one hopes that none of the venerable comedian's material was subjugated to make room for it. It would be far more relevant if Joan Benny were a celebrity in her own right. But this is the fall of 1990 and such things are to be expected of celebrity offspring. George Bush is our president and no doubt he approves. Some of Joan Benny's passages are curious. Obviously, had her father wanted details of his premarital womanizing in his book, he would have put them there himself. Her life is very well detailed up to about 1965, but she says almost nothing of her activities for the past quarter century. Joan Benny pulls no punches in discussing her mother. The two had what would mildly be described as an adversarial relationship. Mary Livingstone Benny (who always introduced herself as Mrs. Jack Benny) is portrayed as a vain, insecure spendthrift. She allegedly was most interested in being with and accepted by the Hollywood elite. Studio

The other side of the ledger essays

The other side of the ledger essays The other side of the ledger is an Indian view of the Hudsons Bay company. The Hudsons Bay companys 300th anniversary celebration where Queen Elizabeth II among the other guests was present, was no occasion for joy among the people whose lives were tied to the trading stores. During the past 300 years, the history has been written by white men. They have only focused on the generosity of the traders and the benefits brought to the Indians. However, there is a sharp contrasting view from what Indians have to say about their lot in the companys operations. At the time of the history, Hudsons Bay company was expended over 1 million square miles of land which is now known as Canada. The Ruperts Land at that time was occupied by the Indians. They (Indians) believed that the land belonged to all men and hence, the land owned by the individual was unknown. However, they failed to recognize that the white men had felt superiority to impose power over their identities. Hence, they just drifted bit by bit into white mens monopoly and never got out of it. Overall, I think, the film has covered up all the basic arguments of the Indians and has helped to understand the period and the people of that time. It has covered all the basic problems of Indians having with the Hudsons Bay Company. In the following, I have highlighted the main points covered in the film which illustrate the basic problems As it is shown in the film, I too think that the introduction of the new weapons (i.e.: guns) was the beginning of the Indians revolution. All the other hunting methods were band. The distribution of weapons in Ruperts land was done by the H.B.C.. Since, company had established treading posts throughout the land and each post was run by the manager, raising up the cost for the weapons was in the hands of t ...

Connection of Social Responsibility and the Need of the Human Being Essay

Connection of Social Responsibility and the Need of the Human Being - Essay Example Ship management must be considered as part of the maritime industry (Donn, 1989), which is in turn, is a part of the transportation industry. It could thus be said that any development in the transportation industry could affect the social responsibilities (Massie, 1987) of those in the maritime industry which will also affect the social responsibilities of these in ship management business. Ship management although made specific must be deemed as still part of business management (Werhane,1999) For the purpose therefore of answering the question, efforts were exerted to focus on those closest to ship management business. Before proceeding further it is also proper to have a working definition of what is a social responsibility. Industry Canada (2007) defined social responsibility as â€Å"a concept with a growing currency within Canada and around the globe† that may assume â€Å"similar approaches such as corporate sustainability, corporate sustainable development, corporate responsibility, and corporate citizenship† and â€Å"many see it as the private sector’s way of integrating the economic, social, and environmental imperatives of their activities.† It also believed CSR to also involve â€Å"creating innovative and proactive solutions to societal and environmental challenges, as well as collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders to improve CSR performance.† Given the concepts, we could now clearly answer the questions. It is very evident that there is a need to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to improve sustainable development. The stakeholders could include almost many people surrounding the business such as customers, employees, the government, and the general public. To illustrate, let us take the case V. Holdings (2007) which declared its pursuit of a strategy of corporate and social responsibility (CSR) as a business imperative. Making it imperative means that it has become very important for the company to implement and do the same if it wants to survive in business or wants to have sustainable development.

Diversity and Cross Cultural Management (HR) Essay

Diversity and Cross Cultural Management (HR) - Essay Example London is among the most diverse: It is only 65% White (Dunnell, 2009). Immigration both internal to the former Commonwealth and current Commonwealth nations such as from India, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong, and from the Middle East, is changing the ethnic background of the country. Against this backdrop, it is vital to understand the United Kingdom from a Hoftstedian framework of power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism and collectivism, masculinity and femininity, and long-term orientation. The United Kingdom has a middling power distance ranking (Kwintessential, 2010). Power distance is an indicator that looks at the way that people at the bottom of organisations or structures perceive both the fact and the justice of unequal arrangements. Kwintessential (2010) states, â€Å"The UK's score in this dimension is 35. This indicates that rank, status and inequalities between people are reasonably low† Legislation at the macro level is designed to protect minority right s from majoritarian intervention. At the micro level, office relationships among peers, superiors and subordinates is relaxed, with plenty of ability to question and give input up the chain. Ceremony is at kept at a minimum. This matches the Gini index being 34%, but unfortunately, inequality at least in strictly economic terms in increasing in the UK: During recessions, such as the one that the UK is currently coming out of, the Gini index and inequality tend to increase (Office for National Statistics, 2010). Acceptance of social distance has to be paired with a reduction in individualism. People who are too individualistic are socialized not to tolerate too wide a variation in power or distance, since that steps onto their autonomy. Unsurprisingly, then, the UK is also highly individualistic. â€Å"The UK scores 89 for Individualism. This is high and therefore points to that fact that British culture values and promotes individuality† (Kwintessential, 2010). The nuclear fa mily trumps other more collectivist kinship structures, and individuality is highly valued at a personal level. However, the United Kingdom does certainly have collectivist trends. The dole and other social welfare policies are protected and respected, and the idea of loyalty to the Commonwealth is still popular. Uncertainty avoidance in the UK is relatively low. The UK scores at 35, which indicates that British culture is open to risks and change. Laws are constantly revised and experimented upon and with by Parliament. Conflict between equals, peers and even inferior-superiors is healthy and accepted. Masculinity is ranked at a 66 (Kwintessential, 2010). Gender bias is certainly real in the United Kingdom, and traditionally masculine values still dominate. However, it is an important fact to bring up that it is important not to be culturally deterministic or monolithic. The construction of what masculinity is certainly has changed in the United Kingdom. Segal (1997) points out tha t there are many types of masculinity that are key to the ascribed and self-expressed social identity of men: Tough, camp, gay, super-macho, classy, â€Å"metrosexual†, sophisticated and refined, rough-and-tumble... men view their masculinity in dozens of ways as there is a changing gender battlefield in the UK. The UK, like many Western countries and like its Anglo-Saxon descendants the US and Canada, is transaction-focused

Explain Kants Theory of Ethics Essay Example for Free

Explain Kants Theory of Ethics Essay Kant was born in 1724-1804, he was a German thinker from East Prussia (now Russia), and he spent his whole life in his hometown. Kant wanted to create a logical, stand-alone theory that wasn’t just based on assumptions, he believed in an objective right or wrong that is decided on reason and that we shouldn’t do the right thing just because it’s right and not to fulfil our desires. Can we lead a life following his ideals are there not some situations where a perfect moral decision cannot be made, are all our choices fuelled by personal gain and desire? He has a deontological and absolute approach to ethics, to Kant what makes an action good is when you do your ‘duty’ and that one’s duty is to always flow the moral law. We should not act out of love or compassion. The motive is what makes an action good –nothing else! The consequences to Kant are meaningless it’s the act itself that needs to be right an example of his thinking would be its immoral to kill 1 man in order to save 10. For Kant the fact that we ‘ought’ to do something implies that it is possible to do it. Thus moral statements are prescriptive: they prescribe an action. Ought implies can, ‘if I ought to do X’, it means ‘I can do X’. Kant also believed that moral statements are a priori (knowable prior to experience) and synthetic, that they can be verified by our empirical evidence so are either true or false. Kant put forward the idea of two imperatives the hypothetical imperative, these are not moral commands and they don’t apply to everyone. In Kant’s eyes you only need to obey them if you want to achieve a certain goal. An example of this would be that Kant observed that the word ‘ought’ is often used none morally, for example ‘if you want to become a better artist or guitarist, you ought to practice’. On the other hand Kant also proposed the Categorical Imperative, these are moral commands that can be universalised and do not depend on anything else. Whereas the hypothetical imperative requires you to go from ‘a’ to ‘b’ then categorical imperative only requires you to just do ‘a’. â€Å"Duties for duties sake† this related to the categorical imperative. Kant then goes on to the 3 maxims, first off to test a moral maxim as it’s a universal law either everyone should follow it or everyone should reject it. The first maxim is ‘Your action should be able to be universalised’ before you act in a certain way, would you like everyone in the same situation to act in the same way. If not, then you are involved in a contradiction it goes against reason, â€Å" so at that principle of action might safely be made of law for the whole world† if you were to take lying through the first maxim its clear it would fail as that would mean everyone would be lying to one another and trust is completely destroyed. The second maxim is ‘Don’t treat people as a means to an end’ Kant strongly believed that you can never use human beings as a means to an end, to exploit or enslave them. Humans to Kant are all the highest point of creation and so demand a unique treatment. This guarantees that all individuals are afforded the moral principles; therefore no humans can be used for the sake of others, he also explained that we have a duty to develop our own perfection, developing our moral, intellectual and physical capabilities. We also have a duty to seek the happiness of others as long as that is within the law and allows the freedom of others. â€Å"Always recognise that human individually are ends and do not use them as a means to your end† therefore you can’t lie for example to further your own needs at the cost of using someone. Kant’s final and third maxim ‘ work towards a kingdom of ends’ this is an overall culmination of the first two, everyone should act as if every person was a ‘end’ and that moral choices be based on any empirical consideration about human nature, human flourishing or human destiny. However it needs to be clear that despite this autonomy this does not mean that everyone can just decide their own morality but rather that each individual has the ability to understand the principles of pure practical reason and follow them. It is impartial and must apply to everyone. If one maxim is disproved then the law becomes immoral and can’t be universalised. Kant also talked about good will and duty, to Kant the ‘greatest good or summon bonum’ is what Kant terms as good will. Someone of good will is not good because of what they achieve (the consequence) but because he/she acts out of duty. Good will to Kant is the only thing that is truly pure, as we can get our reasoning wrong or it can be manipulated, but to have the good will to perform your duty cannot be manipulated or got wrong. Kant contrasted ‘doing your duty’ with ‘giving into your emotions’ or doing what you feel like. The main two meanings of duty come into conflict as the first thought meaning of duty is to obey your superior, this is what the Nazi soldiers claimed innocence about when they were trialled for war crimes they were just following orders but is that moral? To obey the moral law do the right thing and think a situation through is Kants meaning of duty â€Å"Good will shines forth like a precious jewel† –Kant. Kants theory of ethics seems to grant freedom to do anything that can be universalised. This sets the limits but does not give guidance; therefore in order for it to make sense Kant proposed the three postulates, the existence of god, freedom and immorality. We know that morality can exist because we can observe it. However we must be free to perform it as otherwise the act wouldn’t be truly moral. Morality and freedom must come from somewhere to Kant this is God. Kant argues that there must be a God and an afterlife as there has to be some sort of reward. As we cannot be perfect in this life. This is known as reaching the summon bonum that I mentioned earlier, as this cannot be achieved in this life, there must be an afterlife where this can be achieved. For Kant, morality leads to God. Part B: Assess the view that it is always right to keep one’s promises. In Kants view immorality occurs when the categorical imperative is not followed: when a person attempts to set a different standard for themselves then for the rest of humanity. In the Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals, once Kant has derived his categorical imperative he applies it to a number of examples. The second example and probably the most analysed is that of an unfaithful promise. Kant applies his imperative to a person who is short of money who intends to ask for a loan, promising to repay it, but with no intention of doing so. When Kant applies the categorical imperative to this situation he discovers that it leads to a contradiction, for if breaking promises were to become universal then no person would ever agree to a promise and promises would disappear. Kant connects rationality with morality, and sees contradictory behaviour as immoral. Some critics have argued that Kant never asserts the connection between rationality and morality, but most dismiss this and point out that Kant clearly explains how morality must be based upon reason and not upon desires. Another weakness is that what if your friend told you a secret that he was planning to murder someone, it would be your obligation to keep it but is that morally right? Could that surpass the 3 maxims, in the second maxim there can be no use of one individual for the sake of another, are you forsaking the person that is planned to be murdered just to keep a promise. However on the other hand there are strengths to Kants way of thinking as it means everyone single human has intrinsic value, actions are based on reason and logic and there are 3 straightforward maxims that need to be followed so it cuts out many grey areas as if it simply doesn’t follow the maxims it can’t be universalised. Other theories, utilitarianism for example would say it would be wrong to keep a promise of a secret of planned bomb attack that would kill hundreds as you would be saving hundreds of lives by informing the police. Utilitarian’s believe that the outcome outweighs the action. In my opinion I agree with Kant theory as I believe there needs to be trust between people, as relationships with people would mean nothing also it’s a matter of honour if you gave your word to someone I will promise you this etc. then it has to be in the best of your ability to fulfil it if it’s a good cause and not unjust. However in extreme cases such as say the promise of keeping a secret of a planned terrorist attack I would have to side with the utilitarian approach.

symbolaw Symbols and Symbolism Essay - Symbolism in the Title of Chopins Awakening :: Chopin Awakening Essays

Symbolism in the Title of Chopin's Awakening Kate Chopin entitled her second and final novel, The Awakening. In doing so she did not just give an abstract name to her work, but she chose a title with meaning and symbolism. By titling her work The Awakening, Chopin is indicating her feelings and opinions of the Creole society, Edna, her life, and her ultimate decision. The title also symbolizes how Edna defies the constraints of her ordained life as a Creole women and becomes and individual. Furthermore the title the Chopin's novel symbolizes the theme of her novel. In Edna Pontellier's adopted culture, the Creole culture, women have a certain expectations in society. A Creole women must be beautiful, motherly, a good wife to their husbands. "They were women who idolized their children, worshiped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels" (pg. 8). This is what was expected of women, it was their place in Creole society. However Edna awoke from this social institution in which women have a predestined life, which they must live the Creole way. Edna became conscious of the fact that this culture is what kept her from doing what she really wanted to do, to love, live, be independent and to express herself as an individual. Throughout the work Edna is constantly awakening from her naps, constantly awakening to a world she cannot escape. "Each morning she awoke with hope..." (pg. 104) and "When Edna awoke with the conviction that she had slept long and soundly ." (pg. 37), these are a few examples of Edna awakening from slumber. It is only through these frequent naps that Edna defies the constraints of the world she lives in. Her awakening from her naps is symbolic of her awakening from the Creole culture and her husband. Not only does the title symbolize Edna's awakening from her social constraints, but the title also conveys Chopin's opinion of society and Edna. By entitling her novel The Awakening, she is stating that there is an injustice to women in society that people need to conscious of, which people need to awaken to and that Edna has indeed awakened to it.

The Westerner vs “The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky”

Claire Schneider Joseph Libis English 1002 May 30, 2009 Two works of Literature, â€Å"The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky†, the short story, and â€Å"The Westerner†, the film, try to convey the civilization of the old west, which allows for settlement and development of traditional American values, which are associated with honest and hard working people in the West Texas frontier. Although, one of these works does a better job of conveying overall theme.Between â€Å"The Bride comes to Yellow Sky† and â€Å"The Westerner†, I would say that â€Å"The Westerner did a better job of civilizing on the Western frontier. Throughout the film, it seemed as they were always arguing with each other, but in the end Jane Ellen Mathews, and Carl Hardin became friends. One way to prove this would be that Carl had said that he thought Jane Ellen’s hair was the most beautiful hair he had ever seen. He wanted to keep a lock of her hair.To me, that says a lot if you wan t to keep a lock of some ones hair. There was a scene in which there was a play in which Judge Roy Bean purchased all of the tickets for. Before the play began, Carl Hardin appeared, and they started to have a shooting match. I’m not sure what the reason was. After a long match, they both decided to call it even and make up. It’s always great when movies wind up having a great ending. Two of the characters, Jane Ellen, and Carl Hardin, wanted to have a home together. In Bride Comes to Yellow Sky, two people have just gotten married, and are on board a train to Yellow Sky. When they arrive back in Yellow Sky, they rush towards Jack Potter’s house, but they see, on their way six men sitting at a bar, and a man comes out and announces that Scratchy Wilson has been drinking again. In the very beginning of â€Å"The Westerner† there were men sitting at a bar drinking. This would be one similarity that the two works of literature share.

The And Inferior Quality Of Education For African Americans

Education in America is a continually changing process that develops through centuries of history, social standards of the present, and goals for the future. The purposeful separation and inferior quality of education for African Americans maintained the idea of white supremacy. The enduring struggle for equal African American education in this country developed under a large oak tree in Hampton Virginia (History, 2010). Mary Peake risked her freedom to direct an unlawful class for refugees to aid in their first educational experience. This sparked a revolution in education for recently free African American slaves. Born in freedom to an Englishman and light skinned black women, Mary Peake experienced unusual advantages most women of color did not (Taylor, 2005). Mary participated in a privileged ten years of education until she was sixteen. She would have continued; however the United States Congress banned schooling for free African Americans. Mary returned home, and then started to educate African Americans. Mary started small by only teaching reading and writing informally. However, solely because the numbers were slight, does not mean the impact was vast. Mary risked her life to spread the wealth of knowledge among underprivileged people. Her voice goes unnoticed today; yet her teachings remain an integral piece of history. During the time of the Civil War education began to take part in the activist movement.
